Community bankers did let the good times roll!  The Independent Bankers of Colorado Education Foundation’s 36th Annual Convention held in September at the beautiful Vail Cascade Resort and Spa was spectacular! Over 250 attended our annual get-together!  Nearly one hundred bankers were in attendance representing approximately 50 banks.  It was a great crowd, and it’s safe to say everyone had a wonderful time.  We greatly appreciate the support of our attendees, exhibitors and sponsors.

THURSDAY: Our attendees started their Mardi Gras celebration by wearing green, gold and purple at Thursday night’s opening reception.  Beads were everywhere.  Thirty-five exhibitors filled the hallway and exhibit hall.  Everyone enjoyed great food, lively conversation, visiting with exhibitors, and so much more.

FRIDAY: Brett Legg, IBC President and President of The Eastern Colorado Bank called the IBC annual meeting to order on Friday morning.  President Elect DJ Tedesco, President of Castle Rock Bank, under our by-laws succeeds Brett Legg as the IBC President for the 2009-2010 term.  Congratulations DJ!  Brett is now Chairman of the IBC.  The board and membership unanimously approved Tom Chesney, President of AMG National Trust Bank, to the position of President Elect for the 2009-2010 term.  Congratulations Tom! 

In addition, our membership unanimously elected our new slate of Board Members for the 2009-2010 term: Tom Olson, President, Points West Community Bank, Julesburg; Clay Whitham, President, First National Bank in Lamar, Lamar; were successfully re-elected to serve an additional three year term as Directors in District B and C respectfully.  Byron Maynes, President, First National Bank of Cortez, Cortez has been successfully elected to serve a three-year term to fill a vacancy in District D.  The IBC bids a very fond farewell to Alan Overton, President, Community Banks of the Rockies after serving a three year terms on the board.  We also wish Fred Bauer, President, Farmers Bank continued success and prosperity as his term as IBC Chairman has ended. 

Thank you to Larry Winum, ICBA Treasurer and President of Glenwood State Bank, Glenwood, Iowa for his pointed and timely federal legislative update from ICBA.   Brett Legg presented Larry with the covenanted silver spur.  DJ Tedesco, IBC President, took center stage to present his agenda for the upcoming year.

Graduates of the IBCEF’s Career Banker Network Leadership Program were recognized for their achievement for completing this extensive two-year program:  Michael Glass, Alpine Bank; Tom Wright, FirstBank of Colorado; Rob Chaney, FirstBank of Denver; Kelly Durant, North Valley Bank; Ed Brady, FirstBank of Lakewood; Christine Glassmeyer, North Valley Bank, Mike Bowlby, FirsTier Bank; Eric Hoffner, Farmers Bank; Heidi Shipp Saba, Fifth Third Processing Solutions; Joyce Spight, Home State Bank; Ron Munyan, Jr., Garden of the Gods Bank.  Congratulations to our Community Bank Leaders!

Robert and Rebecca Bluestone, Woven Harmony, inspired the audience with their powerful message and amazing artistic capabilities.  Robert, a world-class guitarist, and Rebecca, an internationally recognized artist, wove their creativity message through their respective mediums. Wes Brown, St. Charles Capital, crunched the numbers and presented information about raising capital and bank consolidation.  It certainly appears that 2010 is going to continue to be a challenge for the banking industry. 
Lunch was non-stop.  Barbara Walker, Executive Director of the IBC presented the 2009 legislator awards.  Senator Joyce Foster and Senator Mark Scheffel were recognized as Legislators of the Year; Senator Josh Penry and Representative Frank McNulty were recognized as Spirit of Independence awardees; Senator Rollie Heath and Representative Christine Scanlan as Champions for Small Business and lastly Senator Jim Isgar was recognized with the Legislative Excellence award.

Bob Wells, Principal, The World Humor Organization and Chicken Lips Theatre, inspired everyone to look beyond the obvious to find what you are passionate and most proud of.  Stand up, stretch your arms above your head as high as they will go, and exclaim, “Ta da!!”  Bob projects a positive outlook on life and encourages all to do the same.  He was a breath of fresh air.  Laughter is cheaper than prozac and good for the soul.

Friday afternoon was filled with four standing room only breakout sessions.  Larry Martin, Bank Strategies, presented Top 10 Things Not to do Before, During or After an Exam.  Jeff Multz, SecureWorks, presented Vendor Management:  You Can’t Outsource Risk.  Mark Evans, ICBA Securities, presented New Era for Investing; and Wyatt Jones, Masouda Omar and Alexander Dempster, Colorado Housing and Finance Authority presented Lender Tool Belt – Utilizing the Colorado Credit Reserve Program, New Market Tax Credits and Industrial Development Bonds.   

Our Friday evening events started at the beginning of Bourbon Street and continued to the very end.  Attendees had a grand time visiting with our vendors during our reception.  Dinner was delightful and The 17th Avenue Allstars were absolutely fabulous!

A special thank you to Linda Winter, owner, Accessories with a Flair, for presenting a superb fashion show for our spouse/guest program.  Linda does a remarkable job and everyone enjoys seeing the latest fashions.

SATURDAY: The goods times just kept rolling as Saturday began with our district meeting.  Bankers were informed of IBC’s 2010 agenda and key legislative issues while being able to voice their opinions and gave feedback on issues and concerns. 

Immediately following the district meeting, a panel of distinguished regulators took center stage.  Larry Martin, Bank Strategies, facilitated the panel which was comprised of:  Karen Boehler, OCC; Dave Nowling, Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City; Joe Meade, FDIC and Fred Joseph, Colorado Division of Banking.  Bankers enjoyed listening to the panel and being able to ask poignant questions of the panel.

Three information-packed breakout sessions then followed.  Tom Bieging, Bieging Shapiro & Burrus LLP, presented on Regulatory Enforcement Actions.  Ed Adkins, Sherman & Howard, presented on Loan Workouts and Mitchell Lucas, Harland Financial Solutions, spoke on Real Estate Concentrations. 

Saturday concluded in true Mardi Gras fashion.  Attendees feasted on hors’ d ‘oeuvres while perusing the auction items.  Our live auction took center court just before we were off to dinner.  A special thank you to Norm Arends, Colorado East Bank & Trust for being our auctioneer.  We couldn’t have done it without you!  We raised more than $3,000 for the IBC Education Foundation.  Thank you to everyone who donated and to those who purchased items. 

Mark Fidel, Executive Director, Western States School of Banking, was on hand to present the IBC Education Foundation’s scholarship to Jennifer Witzak, Colorado East Bank & Trust.  Jennifer received a $500 scholarship to the Western States School of Banking based on her outstanding academic performance.  Congratulations!

Brett Legg, IBC Chairman, recognized Kelsey Larsen for her outstanding academic achievements and being a recipient of one of our high school scholarships during our Saturday evening events.  Congratulations! 

The evening ended with an amazing dinner and casino night.  Humphrey Shin, FirstBank of Aurora was the big winner with more than $500,000 in winnings!

Thank you to Cynthia L. Blankenship, ICBA Chairman and Vice Chairman and COO of Bank of the West, Irving, Texas for her pointed and timely federal legislative update from ICBA.  Fred Bauer presented Ms. Blankenship with the covenanted silver spur.

<>Erik Wahl, The Wahl Group, mesmerized the audience with his powerful message and amazing artistic capabilities.  Erik painted three painting while presenting his message.  Allan Tormohlen, Canon National Bank, took the risk posed by Erik and was the recipient of the Abraham Lincoln painting.  Way to go Allan.  There is no reward without risk.  Can you believe there is an economist with a sense of humor?  Jeff Thredgold, Thredgold Economic Associates, followed Erik with an information-packed presentation on the economy and had the crowd laughing while delivering the news. 

Lunch was non-stop.  Barbara Walker, Executive Director of the IBC presented the 2008 legislator awards.  Representative Rosemary Marshall was recognized as Legislator of the Year; Senator Jim Isgar was recognized as Champion of Colorado Rural Communities; and Senator Josh Penry, Representative John Soper and Representative Frank McNulty were awarded the Spirit of Independence award.

<>Charles Johnson, Assistant Athletic Director, University of Colorado, inspired everyone to look beyond the obvious to find what you are passionate and most proud of.  CJ declared the greatest moment of his life wasn’t:  being the winning quarterback in the Orange Bowl; being voted the Most Valuable Player of the Game or even being national champions.  His greatest moment was helping his little brother succeed and choose a right path for his future. 

Friday afternoon was filled with four standing room only breakout sessions.  Dr. David Kohl, AgriVisions, presented Mega Trends of Agriculture in an Age of Turbulence.  Bob Wells and Dave Johnson, World Humor Organization, presented Mental Floss:  Communication, Innovation and Cooperation.  Tom Mecredy, Howe Barnes Hoefer & Arnett, presented information on today’s bank valuation and Mike Colvin, LEVEL5 presented how to explore a new competitive edge idea.    

Our Friday evening events went into overtime.  Attendees had a grand time visiting with our vendors and perusing the silent auction tables in the exhibit hall.  Our live auction took center court just before we were off to dinner.  A special thank you to Norm Arends, Colorado East Bank & Trust for being our auctioneer.  We couldn’t have done it without you!  We raised more than $5,200 for the IBC Education Foundation.  Thank you to everyone who donated and to those who purchased items.  Dancing capped off the evening. 

<>Five spouse/guest programs kept our non-bankers busy throughout our convention.  Friday was filled with wreath making, fly fish casting and a fabulous cooking demonstration complete with wine pairings.  Saturday many ventured off the go fly fishing while scrapbooking events filled the remainder for the morning.  <>Four information-packed breakout sessions followed.  Bill Elliott, Young & Associates, presented a regulatory update.  Mark Evans, ICBA Securities, spoke on directors’ responsibilities in the investment portfolio.  Tom Bieging and Jim Shortall, Bieging Shapiro & Burrus LLP, tackled the bank exposure to customer claims in a troubled environment and Larry Martin, Bank Strategies, LLC and Lauren O’Connell, O’Connell Consulting Group, presented information on preparing for your next CRE exam. 

Mark Fidel, Executive Director, Western States School of Banking, was on hand to present the IBC Education Foundation’s scholarships to Greg Bianchi, American National Bank and Clinton Hemphill, Colorado East Bank & Trust.  Each received a $500 scholarship to the Western States School of Banking.  Greg and Clint were awarded the scholarship based on their outstanding academic performance.  Congratulations!

<>Fred Bauer, IBC Chairman recognized two of our outstanding scholarship recipients during our Saturday evening events.  Whitney Gilliland and Sean Moritzky were present to receive their $1,000 scholarships.  Congratulations!  The IBC Education Foundation awarded six scholarships for a total of $6,000.  <>The evening ended with an amazing dinner and casino night.  Even the fire alarm couldn’t put a damper on our spirits.  Steve Rickard, Farmers Bank was the big winner with more than $125,000 in winnings followed by Jay Dahlberg, TriNet, with $85,000 and Cole Younger, First National Bank of Hugo (our youngest participant) came in third with $24,750.

We’ve already begun planning next year’s convention.  Mark your calendar for Thursday – Saturday, September 17 – 19, 2009 for the Independent Bankers of Colorado Education Foundation’s 2009 Mardi Gras Celebration – Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler – Let the Good Times Roll Convention at the Vail Cascade Resort and Spa.  We look forward to seeing you next year.

Viva Las Vegas Hit the Jackpot!

Chuck Johnston, IBC President and President of North Valley Bank called the IBC annual meeting to order on Friday morning.  President Elect Fred Bauer, President of Farmers Bank, under our by-laws succeeds Chuck Johnston as the IBC President for the 2007-2008 term.  Congratulations Fred!  Chuck Johnston is now Chairman of the IBC.  The board and membership unanimously approved Brett Legg, President of The Eastern Colorado Bank, to the position of President Elect for the 2007-2008 term.  Congratulations Brett!  In addition, our membership unanimously elected our new slate of Board Members for the 2007-2008 term.  Jim Davis, President, FirstBank of Evergreen, Evergreen and Jim Pieters, President, High Plains Bank, Flagler; were successfully re-elected to serve an additional three year term as Directors in District A and B respectfully.  Allan Tormohlen, Vice President, Canon National Bank, Canon City and Steve Short, President, First National Bank of Durango, Durango were successfully elected to serve a three year term to fill vacancies in District C and District D respectively.  The IBC bids a very fond farewell to Slim McWilliams, President, Citizens State Bank Cortez after serving two consecutive three year terms on the board.  We also wish Jim Sower, Chairman, Pine River Valley Bank continued success and prosperity as his term of IBC Chairman came to an end.  Jim served on the IBC board a total of nine years.  Jim’s dedication, service and commitment is unsurpassed.  We will miss you.

Tim Gard, had everyone laughing the moment he took center stage.  Tim’s life experiences were to-the-point, yet presented in a manner that you felt and sensed the humor in the situation.  Attendees were still laughing and using some of Mr. Gard’s techniques throughout the convention.  Diana Nyad, received a standing ovation for her spirited presentation.  The audience appreciated her honesty and willingness to share her life experiences.  We tip our hats and heart to her.

Lunch was non-stop.  Barbara Walker, Executive Director of the IBC presented the 2007 legislator awards.  Representative Joe Rice and Senator Gail Schwartz were recognized as Legislators of Year; Representative Cory Gardner and Senator Ken Kester were recognized as Champions for Colorado’s Rural Communities; Representative Don Marostica and Senator John Morse were recognized as Freshman of the Year and Representative Ellen Roberts was awarded the Spirit of Independence award.

Nadia Perrman
, Personal Banking Assistant Manager, First National Bank of Durango, was presented a $500 scholarship to complete her second year at the Western States School of Banking.  Nadia was awarded the scholarship based on her outstanding academic performance.  Congratulations Nadia! 

Doug Tuminello
, Attorney at Law, Rothgerber Johnson & Lyons, then guided us to the summit of Mount Everest.  His tenacity and perseverance are to be admired.  The pictures and narrative were amazing.  Quite a success story. 

Friday afternoon was filled with four standing room only breakout sessions.  J. Michael Woody, J. Michael Woody, Inc. presented Fighting with Both Fists:  Creating Business Through Directors.  Larry Martin, Bank Strategies, presented information on shareholder value creation.  Derek Dugan, Harland Clarke Education Services, presented information on marketing to the Hispanic market and Carol Croft and David Wright, 1031 Corporation Exchange Professionals presented pertinent information on 1031 exchanges.   


Friday evening was just dog gone fun.  Our events in the exhibit hall had everyone mingling and busy.  Between the exhibitor drawings and cash giveaways there wasn’t a dull moment.  Dinner was divine.  Elvis rocked the house and the casino night was standing room only!  Attendees would probably still be there if we hadn’t closed things down.

Four spouse/guest programs kept our non-bankers busy throughout our convention.  Heck, we even had a program for the fellas – fly fish casting.  Rumor has it the fall fishing has been epic.  The ladies enjoyed the fashion show and the afternoon tour of the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens was spectacular.  When Saturday morning arrived it was time to put away the playing cards and learn how to make greeting cards.  Everyone had a ball once they got the hang of it.

Saturday began with bankers speaking their mind about issues in their communities at the district meetings.  IBC board members were on hand to listen and participate in the roundtable discussions.  Your voices were heard and we appreciate your feedback.  Four information-packed breakout sessions followed the district meetings.  Jeff Gerrish, Gerrish McCreary Smith, PC, presented Director’s and CEO’s Navigating Today’s Challenges.  Dr. David Kohl, Agrivisions, spoke on the megaforces of agriculture.  David Peterson, Goldleaf Financial Solutions, tackled the emerging remote deposit produts and Tim White, Bankers Toolbox, presented information on OFAC and BSA. 

Saturday evening was a gala event complete with a silent/live auction and recognition of our high school scholarship recipients.  Proceeds from the auction benefit the IBC Education Foundation.  Thank you to everyone who donated and to those who purchased items.  We raised more than $8,000.  A special thank you goes to Norm Arends, Colorado East Bank & Trust for being our auctioneer and to Steve Sherlock, Colorado East Bank & Trust and Mike Lenning, Kiowa County National Bank for being our ring men.  We couldn’t have done it without you!
 

Chuck Johnston, IBC Chairman recognized one of our outstanding scholarship recipients during our Saturday evening events.  Amber Bristol was present to receive her $1,000 scholarship.  Congratulations!  The IBC Education Foundation awarded six scholarships for a total of $6,000.  The evening ended with an amazing dinner and the Rolling Tones kept the dance floor packed until late in the evening.  A BIG thank you to Mitchell McCallister for being Jennifer and Maelynn’s dance partner.
