Cha-ching!  Community bankers had a whale of a time at the IBC Education Foundation’s 34th Annual Convention held in September at the beautiful Vail Cascade Resort and Spa.  One hundred and thirty five bankers were in attendance representing more than 55 banks.  It was a great crowd and I think it’s safe to say everyone had a wonderful time.  We appreciate the support of our exhibitors and sponsors.

Thank you to Jim Ghiglieri, Jr., ICBA Immediate Past Chair and President and CEO of Alpha Community Bank, Toluca, Illinois for his pointed and timely federal legislative update from ICBA.

Tim Gard, had everyone laughing the moment he took center stage.  Tim’s life experiences were to-the-point, yet presented in a manner that you felt and sensed the humor in the situation.  Attendees were still laughing and using some of Mr. Gard’s techniques throughout the convention.  Diana Nyad, received a standing ovation for her spirited presentation.  The audience appreciated her honesty and willingness to share her life experiences.  We tip our hats and heart to her.

Doug Tuminello

Friday evening was just dog gone fun.  Our events in the exhibit hall had everyone mingling and busy.  Between the exhibitor drawings and cash giveaways there wasn’t a dull moment.  Dinner was divine.  Elvis rocked the house and the casino night was standing room only!  Attendees would probably still be there if we hadn’t closed things down.

Four spouse/guest programs kept our non-bankers busy throughout our convention.  Heck, we even had a program for the fellas – fly fish casting.  Rumor has it the fall fishing has been epic.  The ladies enjoyed the fashion show and the afternoon tour of the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens was spectacular.  When Saturday morning arrived it was time to put away the playing cards and learn how to make greeting cards.  Everyone had a ball once they got the hang of it.

Saturday began with bankers speaking their mind about issues in their communities at the district meetings.  IBC board members were on hand to listen and participate in the roundtable discussions.  Your voices were heard and we appreciate your feedback.  Four information-packed breakout sessions followed the district meetings.  Jeff Gerrish, Gerrish McCreary Smith, PC, presented Director’s and CEO’s Navigating Today’s Challenges.  Dr. David Kohl, Agrivisions, spoke on the megaforces of agriculture.  David Peterson, Goldleaf Financial Solutions, tackled the emerging remote deposit produts and Tim White, Bankers Toolbox, presented information on OFAC and BSA.

Saturday evening was a gala event complete with a silent/live auction and recognition of our high school scholarship recipients.  Proceeds from the auction benefit the IBC Education Foundation.  Thank you to everyone who donated and to those who purchased items.  We raised more than $8,000.  A special thank you goes to Norm Arends, Colorado East Bank & Trust for being our auctioneer and to Steve Sherlock, Colorado East Bank & Trust and Mike Lenning, Kiowa County National Bank for being our ring men.  We couldn’t have done it without you!

IT’S A PIRATES LIFE FOR ME!
(2006 Convention Wrap Up)

Ahoy mates!  Avast ye!  More than 135 bankers hoisted their sails an’ trawled ‘round Copper Mountain, at the IBC Education Foundation’s 33rd Annual Convention.  Our worthy fleet was represented by 60 banks, 49 associate members, 55 exhibitors and 26 sponsors.  Thanks to this crew, our convention was down right shiver me timbers amazing!<>

Argh! IBCEF’s Swaggering Pirates did an outstanding job in planning and coordinating this year’s convention.  Our thanks to Captain Jim Sower, IBC President and Chairman, Pine River Valley Bank; and First Mate Mike Bass, IBC Education Foundation Chair and President, First National Bank of Hugo; and the entire convention committee:  Dave Wade, Front Range Bank; Lenda Geolfos, First State Bank of Hotchkiss; Patrick Lynch, Colorado Community Bank; Chuck Johnston, North Valley Bank; Jay Rickstrew, Alpine Bank; Mari Lynn Glidden, M4G Investments; Alice Voss, Heritage Bank; Tony Thompson, Alpine Bank; and Brenda May, Colorado East Bank & Trust.

Captain Jim Sower called the IBC’s annual meeting to order Friday morning.  Jim passed the hook—I mean gavel—to President Elect Chuck Johnston, President of North Valley Bank to officially welcome Chuck as the IBC’s new President.  Congratulations Captain Chuck!  The board and membership unanimously approved the following scallywags as IBC’s officers and directors: Fred Bauer, President of Farmers Bank Ault, to the position of President Elect.  Congratulations Fred!  IBC membership unanimously elected our new slate of Board Members: Tom Chesney, President, AMG National Trust Bank in organization, Englewood, and Clay Whitham, President, First National Bank of Lamar, Lamar, were re-elected to serve an additional three-year term as Directors in District A and C, respectively. Tom Olson, President, First National Bank of Julesburg, and Alan Overton, President, Community Banks of Colorado, Durango were elected to serve three-year terms to fill vacancies in District B and District D respectively.  The IBC bids a very fond bon voyage to Jerry Jones, President, Farmers State Bank Fort Morgan, and Lenda Geolfos, Executive Vice President, First State Bank of Hotchkiss, for their two-terms and dedicated service on the IBC Board of Directors.  We also thank Mike Bass, President, First National Bank of Hugo, for his many years of commitment as an IBC officer and director and for his continuing membership on the IBCEF Board of Directors!  Kelly Beauchamp, First State Bank of Hotchkiss and Career Banker Network member, presented the board recognition awards.

Cheers to David Hayes, ICBA Immediate-Past Chair and
President and CEO of Security Bank, Dyersburg, Tennessee, for his pointed and timely federal legislative update from ICBA.  David’s message about the critical need for community bankers becoming and staying involved in the legislative process really hit home.  He emphasized the importance of getting to know and regularly contacting our federal legislators about banking issues.  He went as far as to have everyone stand up and say, “Welcome to Wal-Mart.” to make his point crystal clear about the threat Wal-Mart poses to community banking.  David stressed how contacting your Congressmen can make the difference on crucial banking legislation.  Jim Sower presented David with our coveted carved sterling silver spur.

Chuck Johnston, IBC President, took center stage to present his agenda for the upcoming year.

Thomas M. Hoenig, President, Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City presented information about the 12 Federal Reserve Banks during our keynote presentation on Friday morning.  Mr. Hoenig’s outlook and insight into the economy and monetary policy was enlightening and thought provoking.  It was an honor and privilege to have Mr. Hoenig with us.

Steve Wells, President of Los Alamos National Bank, New Mexico, followed with a blockbuster presentation about his bank’s quest for excellence.  Los Alamos National Bank is the only bank in the nation having been awarded the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award  His presentation also covered ideas to increase employee satisfaction and retention.  He encouraged banks to allow their employees to participate in bank ownership—linking excellence and performance.

Lunch was a flurry of activity.  Jodi Maag, Cashier of Colorado East Bank & Trust in LaSalle presented our IBC 2006 legislative awards.  Representative Terrance Carroll (D) and Senator Lois Tochtrop (D) were recognized as Legislators of Year; Senator Jim Isgar (D) and Representative Josh Penry (R) were recognized as Champions for Colorado’s Rural Communities; and Representative Cory Gardner (R) was recognized as Freshman Legislator of the Year.

Chuck Wachendorfer, Partner, Lennick Aberman Group, wrapped up our luncheon with a snapshot on effectively leading others in times of change by better knowing your self and the four essential elements of leadership.  He brought to light innovative ways to manage change.

Friday afternoon our decks were filled with four dynamic breakout sessions.  Patty Goodwin, Mountain States Employers Council, presented Colorado salary and benefit comparisons.  Tammie Lowrie and Rand Gambrell, BKD, presented information on risk assessment for today and tomorrow.  Andrew Thompson, Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas, Ken Buford, FDIC, and Paul Groot, OCC, participated in an interactive panel discussion on the Bank Secrecy Act.  And Oscar Adams, ICBA Securities, is amazing with the information he provides about the bond and investment markets.

Friday evening was just a pirate’s duffle of fun!  Our myriad events in the exhibit hall had everyone mingling and busy.  Between the exhibitor drawings, treasure chest giveaways, exhibitor cake walk and fish bowl drawings there wasn’t a dull moment.  The climax of the evening was the diamond and champagne fundraiser that kept everyone on edge to find out who the winner of the 1.01 carat diamond would be.  Susan and Keith Varner, Southern Colorado National Bank, Pueblo, were the winners.  To make things even more amazing it was their 27th wedding anniversary.  Congratulations!

Friday’s delicious dinner was followed by the hilarious Greg Claassen and his “Friends!”  A BIG thank you to David Hayes for being such a good sport during the presentation.

Three spouse/guest programs kept our non-bankers busy throughout our convention.  Our first program was a beading project.  Participants made a necklace and pair of earrings.  Wine tasting was our Friday afternoon program.  Everything you wanted to know about wine was presented as well some samplings.  When Saturday morning arrived it was time to relax.  Three wonderful massage therapists were on hand to melt away the stress and tension.

Saturday began with bankers speaking their mind about issues in their communities at the district meetings.  IBC board members were on hand to listen and participate in the roundtable discussions.  Your voices were heard and we appreciate your feedback.  Four information-packed breakout sessions followed the district meetings.  Larry Martin, Banking Strategies, presented information on Colorado bank asset quality.  Jim Cichy, Fifth Third Bank Processing Solutions, spoke on the continuing battle to fight identity theft and credit card fraud.  Parker Lofgren, St. Charles Capital, tackled the merger and acquisitions and Tennyson Grebenar, Rothgerber Johnson & Lyons, conducted a dynamite presentation on flying under the radar.

Our final general session of the convention was the best!  Our Tour de Charity was so much fun and educational.  Teams participated by playing carnival games to win cash.  The cash was used to purchase a brand new red shiny tricycle, tools to build the tricycle and supplies to decorate the tricycle.  All of the tricycles were presented to the judges in a tricycle parade.  Prizes were awarded for the best decorated tricycle, the best tricycle presentation and for the team winning the most money (more than $3 million!).  Best of all the seven tricycles were donated to the Ronald McDonald House.

Saturday evening was a gala event complete with a silent/live auction and recognition of our high school scholarship recipients.  Piano music serenaded attendees while they pursued the auction items.  Proceeds from the auction benefit the IBC Education Foundation.  Thank you to everyone who donated items and to those who purchased items.  We raised more than $6,200.  A special thank you goes to Norm Arends, Colorado East Bank & Trust for being our auctioneer and to Dave Reyher, Colorado East Bank & Trust and Fred Bauer, Farmers Bank for being our ring men.  We couldn’t have done it without you.

The scurvy dogs ‘ere at the IBC Education Foundation tell no tales.  I am pleased to report no one was sent ta the fishes as everyone had a swashbuckling good time.

Golfing Picaroons!
The Raven at Three Peaks was the coordinate for our golf tournament.  More than 100 mateys landed to compete in the annual event.  A plethora of events were sponsored at the tournament.  Blimey – the rain and wind stymied the afternoon a little; however, it did not deter the majority of our competitors.

A hearty round of appreciation goes to Jon Jorgenson for donating a Hippo driver and box of golf balls to our tournament.  Humphrey Shin, FirstBank of Aurora was the lucky winner the driver and Randy Younger, First National Bank of Hugo received the box of golf balls.  Ed Merritt, Jr., The Dolores State Bank won the golf raffle.  Six teams played with enough skill and luck to win our Calloway scored tournament.  Congratulations to:

32nd Annual Convention
September 15 - 17, 2005
Copper Mountain Resort, Colorado

Our convention could not have gotten off to a better start.  Thursday, September 15 was a beautiful day for our annual golf tournament.  More than 100 golfers hit the links at The Raven at Three Peaks Golf Course in Silverthone.  Prohibition was no problem at our opening reception.  Bankers and exhibitors met at the bathtub to discuss the latest products over some gin.  Wonderful food kept everyone satisfied and the golfers were delighted as the winners of the tournament were announced.

Friday started with breakfast and an early dawnbuster session presented by Elizabeth Deal, ICBA Mortgage and Kirk Willison, Freddie Mac.  Troy Evans, The Evans Group, mesmerized the audience portraying his life story.  Troy was sentenced to 13 years in federal prison for five armed bank robberies, in three states, over a six-month crime spree.  Troy served over seven and one-half years and brought down the house with his amazing story of personal triumph and continuing recovery.

During the annual meeting IBC members unanimously elected our new slate of Board Members and Officers for the 2005-2006 term and adopted the annual resolutions.  Patrick Lynch, Senior Vice President, Colorado Community Bank, Centennial; Brett Legg, President, The Eastern Colorado Bank, Cheyenne Wells; and DJ Tedesco, President, Castle Rock Bank, Castle Rock, were successfully re-elected to serve an additional three year term as Directors in District A, B and C respectfully.  Jay Rickstrew, President, Alpine Bank, Rifle was successfully elected to serve three year term to fill a vacancy in District D left by Tony Thompson, President, Alpine Bank Basalt after serving two consecutive three year terms.  Under IBC’s By-Laws, President-Elect Jim Sower, Chairman, Pine River Valley Bank, Bayfield, succeeds IBC’s President Mike Bass, President, First National Bank of Hugo/Limon, Hugo, as the IBC’s President for the 2005-2006 term and Mike Bass becomes Chairman.  The Board unanimously nominated for the position of President-Elect Chuck Johnston, President, North Valley Bank, Thornton.  The IBC bids a fond farewell to IBC Chairman Dave Wade, President, Front Range Bank and District D Director Tony Thompson, President, Alpine Bank Basalt as they leave the board after serving for a number of years.  It was a pleasure to have Terry Jorde, President and CEO, CountryBank USA, Cando, North Dakota, with us to present information about our national affiliate the Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA).  Terry will travel the nation spreading the word about ICBA and how the ICBA is dedicated exclusively to protecting the interests of the community banking industry.  Terry was thrilled to receive the covenanted silver spur that is presented to the ICBA representative each year.

Just prior to lunch, Kristen Anderson, First National Bank of Arvada was presented a $500 scholarship to complete her second year at the Western States School of Banking.  Slim McWilliams, President, Citizens State Bank Cortez and Chair of the Western States School of Banking made the presentation.  Kristen was awarded the scholarship based on her outstanding academic performance.  Congratulations Kristen!

Steve Ford, accomplished actor and President Ford’s son, was our keynote luncheon speaker.  The plans were in the works for President Ford join us for lunch, but as luck would have it President Ford fell the evening before as was unable to attend.  To compensate for his father not attending, Steve presented Mike Bass, IBC Chairman and President, First National Bank of Hugo, with a Presidential golf ball.  Steve warned the ball had a tendency to slice to the right!  Friday afternoon was filled to the brim with four dynamic breakout sessions.  CJ Juleff, CJ Juleff & Associates, had the dubious task of presenting information most bank president’s did not want to hear but needed to hear.  Her hands-on approach on How to Keep your Employees was thought provoking and full of information to take back to the bank.  Stephan Weiler, Center for the Study of Rural America, Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City presented information on the Top 10 Trends for the Future of Rural Banking.  Statistics, analysis, economics – Stephan did a great job with a very tough subject.  Everyone enjoys Jeff Gerrish of Gerrish McCreary and Smith.  Jeff’s presentation on the 10 Issues of Importance for Community Bank Directors was right on target for our bank director attendees.  Tom Bieging, Bieging Shapiro & Burrus; Ernie Panasci, Jones and Keller and Tennyson Grebenar, Rothgerber Johnson & Lyons worked together as a panel to provided up-to-date information on compliance and legal issues.  Friday evening was just fun.  Everyone enjoyed the reception held in the exhibit hall and then a wonderful prime rib dinner.  Chicken Lips presented a customized performance of Murder Most Fowl to bring the evening to close.

Breakfast and exhibits were on the agenda first thing Saturday morning followed by district meetings.  IBC board members host the district meetings where bankers participate in a roundtable discussion about critical issues facing their specific areas of the state and give feedback to the IBC.  Your voices are heard at the IBC.  Four information-packed breakout sessions followed the district meetings.  Larry Martin, Banking Strategies, presented information on The Battle for Colorado Deposits:  Where are the Deposits, Who are the Institutional Winners and Losers and Are We Over Branched?  Larry’s presentation was standing room only.  Steve Santa Ana, St. Paul Travelers, offered invaluable information on the continuing battle to fight identity theft.  The secret is out.  Anthony Lowe and Ken Buford, FDIC, presented information on the Bank Secrecy Act.  Pencils were sharpened and furious notes were taken as tips for passing your next exam were given.  Oscar Adams, ICBA Securities, did a dynamite presentation on the bond market and predictions on next year’s bond forecast.  Every time I think about our final general session of the convention I smile.  Thanks to Bob Wells and Dave Johnson, Chicken Lips and World Humor Organization, for their laughter filled presentation.  While everyone was having fun we also learned valuable lessons on how to treat customers and the power of “yes and” versus no.  Who knew providing quality customer service could be so darn easy?!  My smile on a stick has come in handy a couple times.

Saturday evening was a gala event complete with a silent/live auction; celebration of our IBC Founders and recognition of our high school scholarship recipients.  Piano music wafted through the air as auction items were viewed and bid on.  Proceeds of the auction benefited the IBC Education Foundation.  Thank you to everyone who donated items and to those who purchased items.  A special thank you to Norm Arends, Colorado East Bank & Trust for being our auctioneer and to Ted Magnuson, Farmers Bank and Mike Lening, Valley State Bank for being our ring men.  We couldn’t have done it without you.  Mike Bass, IBC Chairman and President First National Bank of Hugo recognized Josh Meier and Katelyn Starkebaum as two of the scholarship recipients of the IBC Education Foundation.  Barbara Walker, IBC Executive Officer, recognized the men and women who have devoted their careers to independent banking and to serving their local communities.  We honored our industry founders, as well as past and present IBC officers, directors and founding members who have dedicated 35 or more years to our industry.  Dinner was served and then tunes of the Rolling Tunes filled the air and people danced the night away.

Our exhibit hall was sold out once again this year.  Fifty companies exhibited their products and enjoyed the interaction with Colorado finest bankers.  As an added incentive for bankers to visit exhibitors we have an exhibitor quiz.  Each exhibitor has an answer to a question on the quiz.  Bankers then visit the booths to gather the answers and upon completion the quiz are eligible for a prize drawing.  This year’s winners were:
$25          Patty Woodard, Farmers State Bank of Calhan
$50          Mary Ann Findley, Pine River Valley Bank

$100        Tonya Smith, First State Bank of Hotchkiss

For each completed evaluation form, bankers are given a prize drawing ticket.  Winners of our prize drawing tickets were:

$25          Tonya Smith, First State Bank of Hotchkiss
$25          Ron Fincher, Pine River Valley Bank
$50          Skip Slaughter, First State Bank of Hotchkiss
$75          Jan Hall, Valley State Bank
$100        Mark Ward, First National Bank of Hugo

Golf Tournament

After a 45 minute frost delay, more than 100 golfers drove into action at the Raven at Three Peaks Golf Course.  Once the sun came up over the peaks it was a magnificent day.  We played a Calloway scoring format and were able to pay the top three teams in the low gross and low net categories.  Each golfer had a swing to win one of 17 hole contests.  Our mulligan sales were donated to the American Red Cross to support those affected by Hurricane Katrina.  A total of $1,311 was raised and donated.  Thanks to Dick Kreutzer and Premier Bank for their generosity of handing out a sleeve of golf balls to everyone.

  Winners of our tournament were:

IBC Education Foundation Scholarships

The IBC Education Foundation was able to award a total $6,100 in scholarships this year.  Our scholarship recipients were selected from more than 70 applications.  Recipients are chosen by an independent scholarship selection committee.  Members of the IBC Education Foundation selection committee are:  Dan Baker, President, Total Bank Technology; Larry Martin, President, Banking Strategies; Kathy Smith, Account Executive, Pinnacle Financial Strategies; and Mary Marchun, Partner, The Capstone Group.

It was a pleasure to have two of our high school scholarship recipients at the convention this year along with a representative from their sponsoring banks.  Joshua Meier, sponsored by Colorado Community Bank of Yuma, is attending Regis University and Katelyn Starkebaum, sponsored by First National Bank of Julesburg Haxtun Branch, is pursuing her degree at Colorado State University.  Brenda May, Colorado East Bank & Trust, accepted on the behalf of her daughter Holly May who could not be with us during the ceremony.  Holly is attending Lamar Community College.

Unfortunately three of our recipients were unable to attend.  Jennifer Francis, sponsored by Evergreen National Bank is attending Colorado School of Mines; Garrett Markus, sponsored by First National Bank of Las Animas La Junta Branch is attending Otero Junior College; and Kyle Sanderson, sponsored by Alpine Bank is attending Colorado School of Mines.

Auction

Hats off to Norm Arends, Colorado East Bank and Trust, Ted Magnuson, Farmers Bank, and Mike Lening for facilitating our live auction.  Norm, Ted and Mike did an absolutely phenomenal job.  Thanks to all who donated and purchased items.  We raised more than $5,000!

Spouse Programs

The spouse/guest programs were a smash this year.  Several comments were made that these programs were the best ever!  Linda Winters, Accessories with a Flair, presented to a standing room only crowd.  Everyone enjoyed learning tips, tricks and proven techniques for fashion styles and accessories.  Paint your own ceramics brought out the creativity in everyone.  Several masterpieces were painted Friday afternoon.  Monica Sower, Creative Memories consultant, demonstrated how easy and fun it is to collect and embellish photographs and turn them into a beautiful album.  Everyone had a great time turning the ordinary into the extraordinary.
