Annual Conference 2003
EUREKA! THE RUSH IS ON!
We struck gold
Thank you for making our 30th Annual Convention one of the IBC’s best. This year 140 bankers representing sixty banks attended our convention and we almost topped 400 total participants! That is about a 10% increase in banker attendance and a 17% soar in bank participation. As we both know, banker involvement is the key to a successful convention and the IBC’s members are the best. We look forward to our convention set with the background of the beautiful Rocky Mountains.
More than 100 registered golfers turned out to prospect The Breckenridge Golf course on Thursday morning to start the convention. The slight frost delay did not deter our unwavering golfers. A plethora of IBC’s associate members sponsored 20-hole contests. That sets a new record! Six teams were rewarded for their efforts on the course. Following the tournament was a reception for Career Banker Network members, new bank attendees, IBC past presidents and current IBC officers and board members and the evening concluded with the opening reception showcasing our exhibitors.
Friday started bright and early, as miners do. Mike Saunders, Chase Manhattan Mortgage, presented information on how to find financing for sub-standard mortgage loans. The program rewards referring banks handsomely. The dynamic and boisterous J. Michael Woody followed Mike with an outstanding program on Realistic Expectations for Community Banks. He had the audience entranced with the information provided and laughing the entire TWO hours. Mike even poked a little fun at the regulators in the audience (well deserved I’m sure). Immediately following was the IBC’s 30th Annual Meeting. The IBC would like to extend its congratulations to Mike Bass, President, First National Bank of Hugo, who was unanimously elected as IBC’s President Elect. Bill Mitchell, President of Heritage Bank has moved into the position of Chairman and Dave Wade, President, Front Range Bank will now undertake the role of President. We bid a grand farewell to Tom Havens, President, The Gunnison Bank & Trust as he has completed his term as Chairman and we welcome him as a Chairman Emeritus. The IBC is pleased to announce the following directors have been successfully re-elected to serve an additional three year terms as district directors: Chuck Johnston, President, North Valley Bank, District A; Jerry Jones, President, Farmers State Bank of Fort Morgan, District B; Bill Betts, Executive Vice President, Fremont National Bank, District C and Lenda Geolfos, Senior Vice President, First State Bank of Hotchkiss, District D. We also would like to welcome Fred Bauer, President, Farmers Bank to the board. He will be completing the remaining term of Mike Bass in District B. It was an honor to have Cam Fine, President and CEO-Elect of the ICBA and Dale Leighty, CEO and President, The First National Bank of Las Animas and ICBA Chairman-Elect on hand to map the direction the ICBA will be following to represent the community banking industry. Cam Fine will be taking the leadership role at ICBA as Ken Geunther will be retiring in March 2004. We look forward to the renewed excitement and professionalism Cam will bring to the ICBA.
A extremely special and respected Colorado banker was recognized during lunch for his outstanding contributions to foster the independent community banking philosophy and the importance of the IBC. Carey Salomonson, branch manager, Centennial Bank of the West and IBC Chairman Emeritus was honored with the Ivan Fugate Award. The award was kept top secret and Carey’s family and friends surprised him by attending the award ceremony. Our keynote speaker during lunch was none other than Reggie Rivers. That’s correct, the former Denver Bronco. Reggie was dynamite. His contagious “can do” attitude and “never give up” mantra was well received by audience. A valuable perspective for all us of to remember and to live by.
Believe it or we are just to the afternoon sessions. A prospectors day is full of learning tricks of the trade and rewarded as well for his hard work. Our outstanding four-breakout sessions were amazing – standing room only! The topics and speakers included: Identity Theft and Identity Manipulation by Steve Linstrom, World Savings; Legal and Accounting Panel by Tom Bieging, Bieing Shapiro Burrus LLP, Phil Feigin and Tenn Grebenar, Rothgerber Johnson Lyons LLP and Rocky Levkulich, Fortner, Bayens Levkulich and Company; High Performing Banks CEO Panel, by Larry Martin, Bankers’ Bank of the West, Mike Cafasso, Pueblo Bank & Trust, Jeffrey Lee, Premier Bank, Jim Pieters, High Plains Bank, Mari Lynn Glidden, FirstBank of Parker and Dan Ford, Pine River Valley Bank; and last but not least FHLBank Topeka’s Mortgage Partnership Finance Program, by Dan Hess and Kathy Schmidtberger both from FHLBank Topeka. Friday concluded with a reception in the exhibit hall, a wonderful dinner and dancing. Wheew!
Saturday began with our very important and informative district meetings. At these meetings bankers have an open forum to discuss issues impacting their areas. Hot topics of discussion included data matching and Referendum A – the water issue. Good discussions and feedback were gleaned from these meetings. Following the district meetings were four-breakout sessions. These outstanding sessions kept the bankers attention until lunch. Once again it was standing room only. The session were: Rewarding and Retaining Your Employees Panel, Larry Martin, Bankers’ Bank of the West, Kathy Sasser, Alpine Bank, Denise Waddell, FirstBank of Colorado, Brenda May, Colorado East Bank & Trust, and Dave Wade Front Range Bank; A Tale of Two Compliance Issues – CIP and HOEPA, Mary Thorson, Fortner, Bayens, Levkulich & Company; Exposing Card Fraud, Alan Nevels, ICBA Bancard and Understanding the Components of the GLBA “Standards for Safeguarding Customer Information, Craig Martin, Enterprise Systems. To conclude our 30th Annual Convention we held a reception, dinner and were entertained by Don Aslett. Don’s Decluttering Your Life was a hoot! By the way – how many Cool Whip containers do you have stashed away?
Bankers struck it rich in our sold-out exhibit hall as 56 exhibitors displayed their products and services. Our exhibitor quiz keeps both attendees and exhibitors on their toes as this year everyone learned the history of Breckenridge and mining. Did you know there was a 13-pound gold nugget discovered in Breckenridge and that marble from the Yule quarry was used for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier? The diamonds in the ruff were our 34 outstanding sponsors. Their support made this year’s convention a tremendous success. Thank you all!!
LEGISLATORS
The IBC recognized three legislators for their outstanding commitment to supporting community bank issues during the 2003 legislative session: Representative Tom Wiens, Legislator of the Year, Senator Ron Teck and Representative Andrew Romanoff received Spirit of Independence Awards.
WSSB SCHOLARSHIP
Education is a core function of the IBC and we are excited to continue the IBC Academic Scholarship to attend the Western States School of Banking (WSSB). A Colorado banker attending the school is awarded the scholarship based on outstanding academic achievement during their freshman year. The IBC is proud to present its fourth annual $300 scholarship to Ben Johnson, The State Bank – La Junta. Ben will be completing his final year at the Western States School of Banking this year.
IBC SCHOLARSHIPS
Since 1997, the IBC and its members have awarded high school seniors who have a GPA of 3.0 or above, bank at a member IBC bank, and who will attend a Colorado university or college with scholarships. This year a total of six scholarships will be awarded - three to bank employee’s children and three to bank customer’s children. We were fortunate to have two of the scholarship winners and their families present: Kyle Bixenmann, attending the University of Denver was sponsored by Olathe State Bank and Jeff Ipsen, attending the University of Colorado was sponsored by FirstBank of Arvada. Four scholarship recipients were unable to attend the award ceremony: Branden Edwards, Mesa State College, The Bank of Grand Junction; Jessica Millican, Colorado State University, The Dolores State Bank; Stefanie Nelson, Colorado State University, Heritage Bank; and Jenna Zimbelman, Colorado State University, The Bank of Burlington.
OUTSTANDING CBN
IBC announced its second annual IBC Career Banker Network Outstanding Banker of the Year Award. This award is designed specifically to recognize an outstanding member of the IBC. The criteria for the Outstanding Banker of the Year Award are to: Demonstrate quality work standards/performance/customer service; display respect towards others; be actively involved in the community and believe in the philosophy of a community bank. Mary Blackett Randall is this year’s recipient. Mary grew-up in the windy city of Chicago and moved to Colorado in 1997. Since that time she has been extremely involved in her community. Mary was a founder of the Shaw Regional Cancer Center Outreach Team and acts as its Treasurer; was recently named to the Board of the Eagle Valley Family Assistance Fund; and also attends numerous local fundraising and business events. She worked for Millennium Bank as a consultant before the bank opened in September 2001, and is now the executive vice president and Chief Operating Officer of the bank. Millennium’s assets are currently approaching $40,000,000. Here’s is what Don Hartmann, president of Millennium, has to say “Mary has passion for what she does, whether it is underwriting a new loan, taking care of a client, being a role model to the staff or handling a new project critical to the bank’s success. This year she successfully launched Internet banking, a project she was responsible for.” Mary is also responsible for marketing and advertising, CRA initiatives and Millennium’s website administration. Mary joined Millennium because of her belief that a new, locally owned and locally managed bank could provide the level of service, which she believes, is the only way to do business.
