EDUCATION FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED

IBC Education Foundation (IBCEF)
and Colorado’s
independent community banks announce the recipients of their Tenth
Annual Scholarship
Competition. The IBCEF received more
than 70 applications. Requirements for
scholarship
are: A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher;
attend a public or private Colorado university, college, junior
college,
community college, vocational/trade school; have a banking relationship
at an
IBC member bank and completion of an application and essay question. >

Scholarships are awarded
in two
categories: Bank customers and bank
employees’ children. Recipients in the
bank customer category are: Jennifer
Francis, a senior at Evergreen
High School,
will be awarded a one-time
$1,000 scholarship. Ms. Francis plans to
attend Colorado School of Mines and was sponsored by Evergreen
National Bank. Garrett
Markus, a senior at Crowley
County High School
will be awarded a one-time $500 scholarship.
Mr. Markus plans to attend Colorado State
University
and was sponsored by First National Bank
of Las Animas. Katelyn
Starkebaum a senior at Haxtun High School
will also receive a one-time $500 scholarship.
Ms. Starkebaum will attend Colorado State
University
and was sponsored by First National Bank
of Haxtun.>

receive a one-time $500 scholarship. Ms.

The IBC
Education Foundation is a
nonprofit organization that provides financial services education and
training
and supports public educational resources and opportunities. The IBC is a member trade association
dedicated to the enhancement and preservation of the unique American
system of
independent banking. IBC is a trade
association, organized under the laws of the State of Colorado,
and represents more than 110 Colorado
financial institutions doing business in over 400 locations statewide.

2005
IBC Scholarship Program
The
IBC will award a $1,000 one-year scholarship, which will be applied to
the cost of tuition, fees and books at a Colorado public or
private
university or college. At least
two
$1,000 scholarships will be awarded. Payment will be made
directly to the school following enrollment and after classes have
begun.
This is a statewide scholarship contest.
Eligibility
Students must be a
full-time high
school senior attending high school in Colorado. Students must
have
applied to a Colorado public or private university or college,
junior
or community college or vocational/trade school. The student or
his/her
parent(s)) or guardian(s) may not be an employee of the Independent
Bankers
of Colorado.
<>Requirements
A minimum cumulative
GPA of 3.0.
Student must attend a Colorado
public or private university or college, junior or community college or
vocational/trade school.
Either the student or
parent(s)/guardian(s)
have a banking relationship at an IBC member bank or branch for at
least
six months. To check if your bank is an IBC member, visit the
"find
a bank" section of this website.
Application must be
complete, typed
and signed by a representative at your bank.
Student must answer
the essay question.
Deadline
for submission to your bank is Friday, March 25, 2005.
Selection
of Scholarship Recipients
The IBC's independent
committee
will review all applications from IBC member banks and select two
scholarship
winners. Winners will be announced the last week in April,
2005.
The scholarships will not be based on financial need but on the quality
of the application, references and essay response. Awards will be
presented at the IBC's 32nd Annual Convention on Friday, September 16,
2005 at Copper Mountain Resort.
Along
with the completed application, the student must also submit:
Official school
transcript with
SAT or ACT test scores (or both).
Three letters of
reference, one
of which must be from the students high school counselor or a teacher.
Verification of
acceptance to a
university or college, if received.

AND CARROTS
– GOLF AND SCHOLARSHIPS GO TOGETHER
Bankers, bank
customers, IBC associate members and state representatives Diane Hoppe
and Ted Harvey put down their pens and pencils, picked up their golf
clubs
and spent an absolutely beautiful day golfing at the IBC’s 9th Annual
Spring
Golf Tournament and Student Scholarship Fundraiser. The above par
Golf Club at Bear Dance hosted our event. Ninety-nine golfers
participated
in a slice of the action. IBC members are hooked on this annual
event
and look forward to it each year.
Our drive fore
dollars was a success once again. The IBC and its members will
award
$4,000 in scholarship money to deserving Colorado high school
seniors.
Recipients of the scholarships will be recognized during the IBC’s
Annual
Convention on Friday, August 27 in Breckenridge, Colorado.
Requirements
for the scholarship are: GPA of 3.0 or higher; the student or their
parents
bank at an IBC member bank; students complete an essay question; and
attend
a Colorado college, university or junior college. Almost 50
applications

the remaining is given to bank employee children. A HUGE thank
you
goes to the independent selection committee as each application was
examined,
scored and considered. They had an extremely difficult task of
narrowing
the winners to six.
Qualifications
to receive a scholarship were: GPA of 3.0 or greater; be accepted at a
Colorado college or university as a full-time student; have an account
or their parents have an account at an IBC member bank for at least six
months; and complete an essay question and application. An
independent
committee comprised of IBC associate members selected the scholarship
winners.
The committee was: Heidi Albowitz,

Data Corporation, Englewood; Dan Baker, Total Bank Technology
Solutions,
Denver; Judy Straayer, Central States of Omaha, Centennial; and Sandy
Molliconi,
Elan Financial Services, Denver.
Applicants
were judged on their essay question response to: “You’ve applied
for a credit card from company X. Company X has a subsidiary it
is
trying to grow and wants to share the information you provided on your
credit application with the subsidiary. Should company X be
allowed
to share your information? Why or why not?” and on their academic
performance, extra curricular activities, and references.
The winners
for the bank employee category are: Stephanie
Nelson, sponsored by Heritage
Bank in Louisville will receive a $1,000
scholarship; Kyle Bixenmann,
sponsored by Olathe State Bank
in Olathe and Jenna Zimbelman

The scholarship
application and essays will be available for review at the IBC’s 29th

Convention at the Copper Mountain Resort in Copper Mountain, September
12 – 14, 2002. The overwhelming response to the essay questions
was
to educate high school students about financial responsibilities, i.e.
balancing checkbooks, paying back credit card debt, how to apply for a
loan, how to establish credit, how to read a credit report etc.
