Scholarship Application

IBC EDUCATION FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED

 <>The IBC Education Foundation (IBCEF) and Colorado’s independent community banks announce the recipients of their Tenth Annual Scholarship Competition.  The IBCEF received more than 70 applications.  Requirements for scholarship are:  A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; attend a public or private Colorado university, college, junior college, community college, vocational/trade school; have a banking relationship at an IBC member bank and completion of an application and essay question.     <>

Scholarships are awarded in two categories:  Bank customers and bank employees’ children.  Recipients in the bank customer category are:  Jennifer Francis, a senior at Evergreen High School, will be awarded a one-time $1,000 scholarship.  Ms. Francis plans to attend Colorado School of Mines and was sponsored by Evergreen National Bank.  Garrett Markus, a senior at Crowley County High School will be awarded a one-time $500 scholarship.  Mr. Markus plans to attend Colorado State University and was sponsored by First National Bank of Las Animas.  Katelyn Starkebaum a senior at Haxtun High School will also receive a one-time $500 scholarship.  Ms. Starkebaum will attend Colorado State University and was sponsored by First National Bank of Haxtun.  <>

Recipients in the bank employees’ child category are:  Joshua Meier, a senior at Yuma High School, will be awarded a one-time $1,000 scholarship.  Mr. Meier will attend Regis University and was sponsored by Colorado Community Bank Yuma.  Kyle Sanderson, a senior at Rifle High School will be awarded a one-time $500 scholarship.  Mr. Sanderson plans to attend Colorado School of Mines and was sponsored by Alpine Bank.  Holly May, a senior at Lamar High School will also receive a one-time $500 scholarship.  Ms. May plans to attend Lamar Community College was sponsored by Colorado East Bank & Trust.

Scholarship recipients are chosen by an independent scholarship selection committee.  Members of the IBCEF committee are:  Dan Baker, President, Total Bank Technology; Larry Martin, President, Banking Strategies; Kathy Smith, Account Executive, Pinnacle Financial Strategies; and Mary Marchun, Partner, The Capstone Group.

The IBC Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides financial services education and training and supports public educational resources and opportunities.  The IBC is a member trade association dedicated to the enhancement and preservation of the unique American system of independent banking.  IBC is a trade association, organized under the laws of the State of Colorado, and represents more than 110 Colorado financial institutions doing business in over 400 locations statewide.

2005 IBC Scholarship Program


The IBC will award a $1,000 one-year scholarship, which will be applied to the cost of tuition, fees and books at a Colorado public or private university or college. At least two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded.  Payment will be made directly to the school following enrollment and after classes have begun.  This is a statewide scholarship contest.

Eligibility
Students must be a full-time high school senior attending high school in Colorado.  Students must have applied to a Colorado public or private university or college, junior or community college or vocational/trade school.  The student or his/her parent(s)) or guardian(s) may not be an employee of the Independent Bankers of Colorado.
<>Requirements
A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
Student must attend a Colorado public or private university or college, junior or community college or vocational/trade school.
Either the student or parent(s)/guardian(s) have a banking relationship at an IBC member bank or branch for at least six months.  To check if your bank is an IBC member, visit the "find a bank" section of this website.
Application must be complete, typed and signed by a representative at your bank.
Student must answer the essay question.
Deadline for submission to your bank is Friday, March 25, 2005.

Selection of Scholarship Recipients
The IBC's independent committee will review all applications from IBC member banks and select two scholarship winners.  Winners will be announced the last week in April, 2005.  The scholarships will not be based on financial need but on the quality of the application, references and essay response.  Awards will be presented at the IBC's 32nd Annual Convention on Friday, September 16, 2005 at Copper Mountain Resort. 

Along with the completed application, the student must also submit:
Official school transcript with SAT or ACT test scores (or both).
Three letters of reference, one of which must be from the students high school counselor or a teacher.
Verification of acceptance to a university or college, if received.


LIKE PEAS AND CARROTS – GOLF AND SCHOLARSHIPS GO TOGETHER

Bankers, bank customers, IBC associate members and state representatives Diane Hoppe and Ted Harvey put down their pens and pencils, picked up their golf clubs and spent an absolutely beautiful day golfing at the IBC’s 9th Annual Spring Golf Tournament and Student Scholarship Fundraiser.  The above par Golf Club at Bear Dance hosted our event.  Ninety-nine golfers participated in a slice of the action.  IBC members are hooked on this annual event and look forward to it each year.  

Our drive fore dollars was a success once again.  The IBC and its members will award $4,000 in scholarship money to deserving Colorado high school seniors.  Recipients of the scholarships will be recognized during the IBC’s Annual Convention on Friday, August 27 in Breckenridge, Colorado.  Requirements for the scholarship are: GPA of 3.0 or higher; the student or their parents bank at an IBC member bank; students complete an essay question; and attend a Colorado college, university or junior college.  Almost 50 applications were received this year!  Congratulations to our scholarship winners:

AND THE 2003 WINNERS ARE . . .

It was another great year for IBC’s Scholarship Program as more than 60 banks participated, OVER 70 applications were received and $4,000 will be awarded in scholarship money.  Half of the money is given to bank customer applicants and the remaining is given to bank employee children.  A HUGE thank you goes to the independent selection committee as each application was examined, scored and considered.  They had an extremely difficult task of narrowing the winners to six. 

Qualifications to receive a scholarship were: GPA of 3.0 or greater; be accepted at a Colorado college or university as a full-time student; have an account or their parents have an account at an IBC member bank for at least six months; and complete an essay question and application.  An independent committee comprised of IBC associate members selected the scholarship winners.  The committee was:  Heidi Albowitz, First Data Corporation, Englewood; Dan Baker, Total Bank Technology Solutions, Denver; Judy Straayer, Central States of Omaha, Centennial; and Sandy Molliconi, Elan Financial Services, Denver.  Applicants were judged on their essay question response to:  “You’ve applied for a credit card from company X.  Company X has a subsidiary it is trying to grow and wants to share the information you provided on your credit application with the subsidiary.  Should company X be allowed to share your information?  Why or why not?” and on their academic performance, extra curricular activities, and references.

The winners for the bank employee category are:  Stephanie Nelson, sponsored by Heritage Bank in Louisville will receive a $1,000 scholarship; Kyle Bixenmann, sponsored by Olathe State Bank in Olathe and Jenna Zimbelman sponsored by The Bank of Burlington in Burlington will each receive a $500 scholarship.  In the bank customer category the winners are:  Jessica Millican sponsored by Dolores State Bank in Dolores will receive a $1,000 scholarship; Jeff Ipsen sponsored by FirstBank of Arvada in Arvada, and Branden Edwards sponsored by The Bank of Grand Junction in Grand Junction will each receive a $500 scholarship.

The scholarship application and essays will be available for review at the IBC’s 30th Annual Convention at the Beaver Run Resort in Breckenridge, September 25 – 27, 2003.  The overwhelming response was NO the information should not be shared with the subsidiary.


AND THE 2002 WINNERS ARE . . .

The winners for the bank employee category are:  Sarah Miller, sponsored by Centennial Bank of the West in Greeley will receive a $1,000 scholarship; Heather Pitner, sponsored by FirstBank of Northern Colorado in Fort Collins and David Bryant sponsored by FirstBank of Lakewood in Lakewood will each receive a $500 scholarship.  In the bank customer category the winners are:  Brian Lengel sponsored by Sunwest Bank in Idalia will receive a $1,000 scholarship; Rachel Roberts sponsored by FirstBank of Lakewood in Lakewood, and Kevin Miles sponsored by Colorado East Bank and Trust in LaJunta will each receive a $500 scholarship.

The scholarship application and essays will be available for review at the IBC’s 29th Annual Convention at the Copper Mountain Resort in Copper Mountain, September 12 – 14, 2002.  The overwhelming response to the essay questions was to educate high school students about financial responsibilities, i.e. balancing checkbooks, paying back credit card debt, how to apply for a loan, how to establish credit, how to read a credit report etc.

It was a record setting year as more than 80 banks participated, 76 applications were received and $4,000 will be awarded in scholarship money.  Half of the money is given to bank customer applicants and the remaining is given to bank employee children.  A HUGE thank you goes to the independent selection committee as each application was examined, scored and considered.  They had an extremely difficult task of narrowing the winners to seven. 

Qualifications to receive a scholarship were: GPA of 3.0 or greater; be accepted at a Colorado college or university as a full-time student; have an account or their parents have an account at an IBC member bank for at least six months; and complete an essay question and application.  An independent committee composed of IBC members and associate members selected the scholarship winners.  The committee was comprised of:  Steve Hogan, Vista Bank, Colorado Springs; Colleen Schwarz, The Colorado Housing and Finance Authority, Denver; David Lewien, Global Village Systems, Englewood; Dan Baker, Total Bank Technology Solutions, Denver; and Tom Menk, Menk & Associates, Wheat Ridge.  Applicants were judged on their essay question response to:  ÏWhat new product or service other than Internet banking should your bank offer in the future and why?Ó and on their academic performance, extra curricular activities, and references.

Jared Bryant, sponsored by First National Bank in Yuma received a $1,000 scholarship. Tom Hubbard, sponsored by First National Bank in Limon, Clayton Unrein sponsored by First National Bank in Fleming; Sasha Easton sponsored by the Centennial Bank in Pueblo, Adam Martin sponsored by Colorado Community Bank in Milliken, Randall Williams sponsored by Valley State Bank in Lamar; and Carolyn Houser sponsored by North Park State Bank in Walden each received $500 scholarships.  The committee had such a difficult time selecting a $1,000 winner in the bank customer category, they awarded four $500 scholarships.

The scholarship application and essays will be available for review at the IBCÌs 28th Annual Convention at the Copper Mountain Resort in Copper Mountain, September 13 Ò 15, 2001.  The overwhelming response to the essay questions was to educate high school students about financial responsibilities, i.e. balancing checkbooks, paying back credit card debt, how to apply for a loan, how to establish credit, how to read a credit report etc.
