Jeff Restad, jrestad@bell.bank

Headquartered in Fargo, N.D., Bell Bank is one of the largest independently owned banks in the nation, with assets of more than $8 billion and business in all 50 states. As a privately held company, owned by several majority stockholders, about 140 additional stockholders and Bell employees through an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP), we don’t have the pressure of next quarter’s earnings. Instead, we focus on a healthy balance of profitability, growth and nurturing relationships. Unlike a typical correspondent bank, Bell’s focus is working as your partner. We have larger hold limits, so we won’t resell your loan participation with us. We also have a team dedicated to correspondent banking and credit, so we can provide flexible underwriting, competitive lending terms and prices, fast decision-making and consistent communication. Having partnered with more than 300 other independent community banks across 16 states, we’ll help you enhance your customer relationships through our experience-based expertise in participation loans, bank stock and ownership loans and equipment financing. In providing these services, we become your behind-the-scenes partner, helping you work in a larger relationship without threatening your relationship with your customer. Call 701-298-1500 to learn how. Bell Bank, member FDIC.

Rich Bratten, rbratten@bfsgroup.com

Richard K. Bratten has worked in the Executive Benefits and Corporate Owned Life Insurance markets for over two decades. Since 1999 he has worked as a National Sales Consultant and a consulting principal at two large national firms specializing in executive benefits and Bank Owned Life Insurance (BOLI).  Prior to his consulting role, Mr. Bratten worked in the insurance industry for more than a decade as an actuary. He concentrated on developing products for the corporate-owned life insurance (COLI) and bank-owned life insurance (BOLI) markets, including new products for the nonqualified deferred compensation markets. Mr. Bratten’s product development experience includes innovations in general account, hybrid and separate account designs in order to meet the unique needs of financial institutions. Mr. Bratten’s experience in managing the product design and daily operations of a $3 billion portfolio of BOLI & COLI at a major insurance company enables him to bring a unique perspective to his consulting role. As an actuary, Mr. Bratten has designed, priced, and filed products with state insurance departments across the country that were tailor made for the BOLI/COLI market. His background as an actuary also includes extensive experience with valuation, pricing, investment and asset/liability management. As a CFA Charterholder, his expertise in the investment arena allows him to bring in-depth investment analysis into his consulting role. This is particularly important when evaluating the alternative investment approaches that are available as well as insurance company due diligence review. Between his experience as an actuary and an investment professional, Mr. Bratten is uniquely positioned to educate institutions on the many decisions inherent in the Corporate Owned Life Insurance market. Mr. Bratten has spoken to many industry groups on topics relating to nonqualified benefits and BOLI. He has also authored papers for various banking publications and associations.  He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Cincinnati. He also attained his MAAA (Member, American Academy of Actuaries) in 1996, his FSA (Fellow, Society of Actuaries) designation in 1997 and his CFA Charter (Chartered Financial Analyst) designation in 2001.
